Openings & Closings

Local Italian restaurant closes KC location. Johnson County spot remains

Despite its resilient history, Plate Italiano Moderno — a local Italian restaurant — has closed one of its locations.

The Brookside spot at 701 E. 63rd St., Suite 100, is permanently closed, according to signs taped to its windows.

The signs direct customers to its Leawood location at 11655 Ash St. in the Park Place shopping center.

The Brookside location has been removed from its website and is now marked permanently closed on Google. Plate Restaurant Group could not be reached Monday afternoon to answer The Star’s questions.

Owner Christian Joseph opened Plate’s original Kansas City spot in 2015, though not without hiccups.

Two years after opening, a fire heavily damaged the restaurant. It moved down the street and reopened in 2019.

In 2020, the restaurant owed employees more than $42,000 in back wages before closing amid the pandemic. An investigation from the Department of Labor found the restaurant did not have the funds to pay its employees.

“We didn’t mean for that to happen,” Joseph told The Star at the time. “We did everything we could to get it to our employees as quickly as we could.”

Employees were paid in full and offered jobs back when the restaurant returned to normal operations, Joseph said.

In 2021, Joseph opened the Leawood location.

Then, this summer, Plate voluntarily filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Kansas District Court.

The restaurant’s Leawood spot still serves lunch and dinner items including bolognese, osso bucco, funghi pasta and more.
