Chicken chain expanding around KC. Here’s the next spot it’s eyeing

Popeyes Louisiana Chicken — a national chain that’s been expanding recently in the metro — is looking to build another restaurant in KC’s Northland.

The chain has submitted plans to the city to build a new building with two drive-thru canopies at 9806 N. Oak Trafficway, near a newly built Culver’s.

The new plans, submitted this week, are still under review and must first be approved by the city before they can be completed.

This isn’t Popeyes’ first attempt to enter the neighborhood, according to public documents in the city’s portal.

Developer BB North Oak Devco, LLC filed plans in late 2024 to open a Popeyes at the site, but those plans failed at a City Council meeting last year.

Popeyes has opened several locations in the metro in the last few years.

Some of its most recent additions: near Tanger Kansas City at Legends at10930 Parallel Parkway, one in a former Overland Park Lion’s Choice at 10313 Metcalf Ave., and another in a former Tay’s Burger Shack at 7724 W. 151st St. in Overland Park.

A remodeled Popeyes at 6821 Johnson Drive in Mission reopened after a fire in 2023.

Popeyes has just a few spots in the Northland, including one at 6901 NW 83rd Terrace.
