Gourmet deli opens in Johnson County: ‘Best sandwich they’ve ever had’
Opening a deli hasn’t always been on Adam and Kelly Bracco’s bucket list.
The idea only came to the husband and wife about two years ago, when the Braccos took a family vacation to Montana and stopped at a local deli called Tagliare. One bite into the Sublime (prosciutto, hot soppressata, burrata, fresh walnut pesto, spicy garlic aioli, sun-dried tomatoes and arugula), and Adam realized it was the best sandwich he’d ever had.
He decided to reach out to Matt Benzel, the owner of the deli, and hound him about a partnership to open a spot closer to home.
“He finally got through to me,” Benzel said, sitting in his new Kansas City area deli. “And then here we are. It worked out.”
The Overland Park version quietly began serving customers this week at 14363 Metcalf Ave. It’s called La Fetta, which is Italian for “the slice.”
True to its name, it sells freshly sliced meats and cheeses from Boar’s Head, as well as more than 20 sandwiches and products imported from Italy and beyond: pasta, sauce, etc.
Sandwiches are made with ciabatta-style baguettes from local company Farm to Market Bread Co. Baguettes are delivered daily and never frozen.
“We’ve had four people say it’s the best sandwich they’ve ever had in their lives,” Adam said, then added with a smile. “I didn’t know three of them — one of them was my brother.”
Most of the sandwiches at the Johnson County shop are identical to ones made at Tagliare. So far, the top sellers have been the Beach Boy (turkey, bacon, Swiss, spicy garlic aioli, avocado spread, red onion, tomatoes and greens) for $13.95 and the Queen (turkey, bacon, fresh mozzarella, fresh walnut pesto, pepperoncini, piquillo peppers and basil) for the same price.
After the shop has a few more days under its belt, it will offer charcuterie.
Each sandwich is piled high and about 7 inches long, with the Bambino (kid’s version) measuring 4 inches.
“I think the food — we put a lot of time into it, so it’s a nice size sandwich. High-quality is really what we want,” Adam said.
Tagliare in Missoula, Montana, was started in 2008 after its original owner couldn’t find anything in the area like the Italian delis she was used to in New Jersey.
Things have changed since then. Benzel took over in 2018, and it’s now a subtly rock-themed joint with sandwiches named after bands (Pearl Jam, Cure, Flaming Lips, and Doobie Brother are some of the sandwiches).
Benzel and the Braccos have reported overwhelmingly positive feedback from those who’ve visited La Fetta. All five-star reviews on Google thus far. They encouraged others to stop in and see why Adam felt compelled to bring a taste of Tagliare to Overland Park.
“I think once people come in and try it, they’ll understand Adam’s passion for what he wanted to do,” Benzel said. “That will click to them, ‘Okay, I see what he fell in love with, and why he wants to recreate here.’”
Plus, a barbecue sandwich is in the works. TBD on when that will drop — La Fetta is still focusing in on the sandwiches customers know and love for now.
“I think that’s going to be a hit,” Benzel said. “We’ll make sure we’ll execute it perfectly.”
