Ten floors above Kansas City’s Country Club Plaza, a new rooftop bar is waiting to take flight.

Momentum, a semi-private club and rooftop bar, is perched above Cascade Hotel at 4600 Wornall Road. Down below, a new food hall will also debut soon.

The rooftop bar is not Wizard of Oz-themed, but one early visitor remarked that it looked like Emerald City. Eric Willey, director of outlets for Cascade, can understand that — it’s covered in emerald green couches and curtains. Gold accents are sprinkled about the lounge.

Its rounded, Spanish-style architecture matches the rest of the hotel.

“The space alone invokes a high-end look and feel,” Willey said.

Customers will likely notice the bird motif echoing throughout Momentum. Its name references the movement of birds in flight, as does its elevation.

“I think it’s one of the — definitely best views on the Plaza — and I think in Kansas City,” Willey said.

The space will fit about 100 inside and 60 on its patio.

Two membership tiers are offered. The highest tier offers exclusive access to the club, lockers, and various events, like rooftop yoga, Chiefs games and more around the city. Willey did not disclose the price for that tier, the Founding Membership.

The next tier, Signature Membership, is for $1,000 a year and offers first-dibs on reservations and key card access, as well as discounts to Cascade Hotel and Sojourn Spa.

Those who are interested in becoming members can contact Willey at eric@momentumloungekc.com.

If open spots are available a week out, the general public can book a time to dine on Tock, a reservation platform.

Drinks on Momentum’s menu include the Bird’s Eye View (rum blend, campari, passionfruit, citrus oleo saccharum, cinnamon-honey and mint for $17), and Non-Chalant (Mezcal, Blanco, agave, lime, chili and vanilla gold dust for $16).

Willey is calling on the help of chef Bradley Gilmore of Lula Southern Cookhouse for the food portion. A sampling of its bites: caviar and chicken, oysters, ham biscuits, beef carpaccio, wagyu beef tenderloin and ravioli.

At the moment, it’s open for some hours to members. Willey said they’re hoping to do a full launch of Momentum by the end of September, in time for the Plaza Art Fair.

Meanwhile, Willey’s team is readying for the opening of another concept, this one replacing Strang Hall.

Plaza Provisions will open Monday, featuring local vendors like Lula, Guy’s Deli & Pizza and Hawg Jaw Barbecue.

It will also have a J. Rieger & Co. bar on the second floor, along with a full Messenger Coffee Co. coffee bar in the lobby.

“It’s kinda like food halls 2.0. We’re elevating the food hall game,” Willey said. “We’re going with very established brands.”

Strang Hall closed on the Plaza in December after just a year in business. Its Lightwell location also closed. It still has a location in downtown Overland Park.

The Plaza was purchased by Dallas-based HP Village Partners last year. While significant changes are planned for the Plaza, construction has yet to begin.
