After one Kansas City pizza concept closes, another has replaced it
It’s been a busy first couple of days at the new Martin City Tavern in Kansas City’s South Plaza neighborhood.
Nathan Tilton, chief operating officer of Martin City Brewing Co., told The Star that customers have been excited about the new menu at the local chain’s sixth location, 4950 Main St. (That’s not including its spot in the Kansas City International Airport or its stand in the CPKC Stadium).
In addition to its beloved pizzas and salads, the concept offers cheese curds, Nashville hot chicken sandwiches and more.
“Our smashburger has been our No. 1 seller,” Tilton said.
If customers notice that the name of the South Plaza location is slightly different than its sister spots (all called Martin City Brewing Co. Pizza & Taproom), that’s intentional. Tilton said it’s a nod to the restaurant’s updated menu.
Of course, it will still sell its beloved brews on tap and beloved pizza slices: veggie, supremo, fig and prosciutto, wild mushroom and more.
Martin City Tavern is replacing the former Spin! Pizza spot, which closed at the beginning of the year.
“This location seemed like a great spot,” Tilton said. “There’s so much new in the South Plaza district that we wanted to be part of it. We wanted to bring our fun, lively culture to this area.”
Tilton added that the company is actively pursuing other locations in the metro, but he couldn’t disclose just where yet.
The business got its start in 2011, first as a small microbrewery in Martin City. In 2014, it opened a pizza and taproom next door.
Spin! Pizza still has more than a dozen locations in Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Texas.
At the time the South Plaza location closed, a spokeswoman told The Star that it would have required some appliance updates, and the team determined it made more sense to focus on other locations.
