This pizza place and taproom is coming to Johnson County, replacing burger spot
Florida-based chain Smokin’ Oak Wood-Fired Pizza & Taproom is opening its first location in the Kansas City metro.
The brand has filed an application to open a spot at 15241 W. 119th St. in Olathe, in the former home of Smashburger.
The company website lists the spot as opening in fall 2025.
Smokin’ Oak offers wood-fired pizzas like the Smokey Dokey (barbecue sauce, mozzarella, chicken, applewood bacon and red onion baked in a wood-fired oven, then topped with cilantro) and the Italian Stallion (olive oil, mozzarella, Parmesan, prosciutto, Roma tomato, crushed red pepper, garlic and sun-dried tomato topped with basil and cracked black pepper).
Self-pour taprooms are part of the Smokin’ Oak business model, where customers scan wristbands to start a tab and pour their own drinks from a tap wall. Customers are charged per ounce.
Smokin’ Oak could not be reached for comment to discuss specifics of the location and whether a self-pour taproom would be included in its plans.
The company’s roots trace back to Rochester, Minnesota, where entrepreneur Linda Black opened Pi Wood-Fired Pizza.
After reconnecting with her childhood friend Matt Mongoven, the two developed Smokin’ Oak.
Today it has locations in Florida, Georgia, Nebraska, Colorado, and Arkansas. It has one location in Washington, Missouri, near St. Louis.
Its corporate office is in St. Petersburg, Florida.
