Mexican restaurant closing a Kansas City area spot. Something else will move in
A Kansas City area Mexican restaurant is waving goodbye to its Liberty location after 4 1/2 years.
Then, another quick-service restaurant will take its place.
Macarena’s Mexican Food is closing its 416 E. Mill St. spot Saturday, the brand announced via social media this week. Its larger spot, 5171 NE Chouteau Trafficway, will remain open.
“We leave with hearts full of gratitude for the memories, the support, and the love you’ve shown us,” Macarena’s said in its announcement. “As we move forward, we’re excited to continue doing what we love from our Kansas City location — finding that beautiful balance between family and business.”
The quick-service restaurant sells birria burritos, street tacos, enchiladas, chimichangas and more.
Ownership with Macarena’s could not be immediately reached for comment Thursday afternoon.
Meanwhile, Abelardo’s Mexican Fresh is looking to open a new iteration of its existing concept in the Liberty space.
The Nebraska-based chain with 60 locations in seven states is launching its first restaurant without a drive-thru. At the Liberty location, customers will order their food at a kiosk and opt to eat it in-store or take it to-go.
Abelardo’s sells tacos, quesadillas, rice bowls, nachos and more.
It has several locations in the metro, including 7510 Shawnee Mission Parkway in Overland Park, 1348 S. Noland Road in Independence, and 300 SE Third St. in Lee’s Summit.
The Liberty Macarena’s location is the latest of several metro Mexican restaurants to close.
This year, Salty Iguana, Tortilla Flats and Ixtapa Fine Mexican Cuisine’s Overland Park location have all closed.
While Ixtapa Mexican Cuisine still has its Kansas City spot at 7103 NW Barry Road, owner Victor Esqueda told The Star he decided to close the Johnson County spot due to rising rent and food costs.
