National Tex-Mex chain has closed its last Kansas City area restaurant after decades
On the Border Mexican Grill & Cantina has closed its last Kansas City area restaurant.
The lights are off at the Overland Park spot, 11855 W. 95th St., near Oak Park Mall. It had been there for 25 years, overtaking local Mexican restaurant Annie’s Santa Fe.
A spokesperson with the mall confirmed that On the Border had closed in late February. On the Border could not be immediately reached Wednesday afternoon for comment.
Last year, the chain closed three locations: in the Northland (8340 NW Roanridge Road, at Barrywoods Crossing), Independence (19921 E. Jackson Drive), and Lee’s Summit (1800 NW Chipman Road). At the time, the Overland Park restaurant was the only remaining spot.
The Dallas-based chain first entered the Kansas City market in the mid-1990s with a Country Club Plaza spot (700 W. 47th St., now Eddie V’s).
It still has locations in Topeka and Wichita.
Oak Park will soon welcome women’s clothing brand Aur Society on the second level, next to Vans. An exact opening date has yet to be announced.
Nearby, Ohio-based Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream will open at 11885 W. 95th St., next to Cava and Bibibop.
