Old-fashioned ice cream shop is hitting the KC market with Johnson County location
Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream — a chain that makes its frozen treats fresh in-store “like the old days” — is opening its first Kansas City area location.
The company has plans to open a spot at 11885 W. 95th St., near Oak Park Mall. The space was formerly rolled ice cream shop Freezing Moo, and it neighbors Bibibop Asian Grill and Cava.
A spokesperson with Handel’s confirmed to The Star that it would open at the Overland Park location but could not give an exact date. It expects to open sometime this year.
Alice Handel opened a neighborhood ice cream shop called Handel’s in Youngstown, Ohio, in 1945, using her own recipes and fruit from her garden.
Handel’s holds to its original recipes and methods today, though it’s grown to dozens of locations across the country, in Indiana, Colorado, Texas, California, Arkansas and beyond.
The Johnson County spot will be the first Handel’s in Kansas.
Each store has 48 flavors that rotate monthly. A few on Handel’s menu: bananas foster, caramel pretzel crunch, mocha almond fudge ripple, coconut cream pie and taro.
Handel’s also sells sorbets, sherbets and frozen ice.
