Major craft chain Joann will close more than half of its stores, including two in the Kansas City area.

The company told USA Today that it would close about 500 of its 850 stores. The chain filed for bankruptcy in January — the second time in less than a year.

Court documents list the 3810 Crackerneck Road store in Independence and 1153 E. North Ave. location in Belton as stores the company plans to close.

Employees at both stores told The Star on Wednesday that they had not been given a closing date.

Also on the chopping block: 603 N. Belt Highway in St. Joseph and 2108 W. 27th St. in Lawrence.

In all, the company plans to close stores in 49 states in an effort to “right-size its footprint,” a spokesperson told USA Today.
