‘In light of the events of the past year,’ Kansas City coffee shop to close location
Prefix Coffee will close its Grandview location Friday.
“With a heavy heart, but an even clearer sense of resolve, we announce our official departure from Grandview, in alignment with our original plan to close both of our coffee shops on the IHOPKC properties in light of the events of the last year,” the owners wrote on Facebook this week.
The local coffee chain announced in March that it would be shutting down its two locations leased from the International House of Prayer, which has been mired in scandal since the fall of 2023. Multiple members of the Kansas City church have accused founder Mike Bickle of sexual abuse, and a third-party investigation is currently underway into allegations of a potential cover-up by IHOP’s leaders.
Prefix — which is owned jointly by Joel and Lindsay Friedrich, Jonathan and Sarah Friedrich, and Colin and Melissa Dwyer — previously told The Star their company was not affiliated with IHOPKC. They reiterated that in their post announcing Friday’s closing in Grandview, saying Prefix was “never owned or managed by our landlord organization.”
The company closed its south Kansas City location at 3523 E. Red Bridge Road, also leased from IHOPKC, earlier this year.
The closing of the Grandview location (12905 S. U.S. 71 Highway) leaves two remaining Prefix locations in the Kansas City metro. One is at downtown’s Lightwell building at 1100 Main St. The other is in midtown at 325 E. 31st St.
