Discount grocery store’s newest Johnson County location is about to open. See where

Aldi will open its newest location in the Kansas City area next week, according to a press release from the company.

The grocery store at 12055 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, will open at 8:45 a.m. on Dec. 5.

The new store will be open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily.

Its first 100 customers will receive a gift bag full of Aldi products. Customers who visit Dec. 5 through Dec. 8 can enter for a chance to win a $500 gift card, the company said.

The new Aldi location was formerly Buybuy Baby, which closed last year after parent company Bed Bath & Beyond filed for bankruptcy. It had been there since 2011.

Before that, national bookstore chain Borders Books Music Cafe operated there for several years.

Aldi has a handful more locations in Johnson County, including ones in Overland Park at 8640 W. 135th St. and 8333 W. 95th St.

Aldi began in 1961, when the Albrecht family opened their first discount grocery store in Germany. Sixteen years later, they opened Aldi in Iowa. Today, there are around 2,400 stores across the U.S. The chain is known for its discounted and specialty items.
