Two years after opening, this Kansas City chicken wing and tender restaurant closes
Chicken restaurant WingStand by Jefferson’s closed its Kansas City location at 7715 State Line Road on Sunday.
The restaurant announced the news on social media, saying owners are looking for another location that “better (fits) our needs.”
“We want to offer a big, heartfelt thanks to our fiercely loyal customers at our State Line location as we close this location,” WingStand’s Instagram post reads. “So stay tuned and we’ll update you as soon as we have the new location mapped out.”
Its Mission location at 5438 Johnson Drive will remain open.
WingStand is a concept by Lawrence-based Jefferson’s Franchise Systems. The first Jefferson’s — a wings, burger and oyster restaurant — opened in Alabama more than 30 years ago.
The State Line location was the first WingStand. Its quick-service setup offered a slightly different experience than Jefferson’s, which are larger restaurants with a larger menu.
WingStand sells fresh, made-to-order wings and breaded chicken tenders with a variety of sauces.
The restaurant joined a burgeoning number of chicken and wing restaurants that opened post-pandemic, including It’s Just Wings and Buffalo Wild Wings’ new takeout concept, Buffalo Wild Wings Go, at 6638 Monticello Road in Shawnee. In September, Strip’s Chicken took over the old Blondie’s bar at 5831 Merriam Drive.
Celebrity-owned wing restaurant Dave’s Hot Chicken made its way to the Kansas City area in August with its 9097 Metcalf Ave. spot. Its Westport location opened in November.
