Local burger place closed in Johnson County last year. This popular chain is moving in
While Tay’s Burger Shack has held a loyal following in Kansas City’s Northland since 2014, its Overland Park location floundered.
The burger restaurant at 7724 W. 151st St. closed in summer 2022 after two years, mainly because it did not have enough staff, its owner, Kent Harrison, told The Star at the time.
Now the spot, vacant since Tay’s moved out, will turn into a Popeyes Louisiana Chicken, according to CSM Group, a franchise company.
Faizan Yousuf, a CSM senior manager, said the new restaurant should open in the first half of 2024.
Several Popeyes locations have been popping up around the metro. Its Lenexa restaurant opened at 9460 Quivira Road on Sept. 23, and its Shawnee location at 6235 Nieman Road opened shortly after on Nov 2.
Planned for next year: a (rebuilt) Mission Popeyes at 6821 Johnson Drive. (The location was destroyed by a fire earlier this year, and the chain hopes to serve customers in that spot again.)
Yousuf said his group owns all 20 Popeyes in the metro.
Popeyes began in New Orleans in 1972 as a fried chicken restaurant called Chicken on the Run. Today the fast-food chain, known for its spicy chicken sandwich, has more than 3,700 restaurants across the country.
The North Kansas City Tay’s remains open at 1019 Armour Road.
Before Tay’s took over the Overland Park spot, the building housed a Hardee’s.
