State shut down Johnson County antique mall. Now it’s back open, files for bankruptcy
When Overland Park’s Metcalf Antique Mall at 9148 Metcalf Ave. closed Sept. 20, customers and vendors were shocked.
The Kansas Department of Revenue had executed eight tax warrants that morning — totaling more than $62,000 — and took possession of the mall. Red “seized” signs were plastered on its doors and windows, and shoppers and sellers alike peered into the building’s windows, wondering if it would reopen.
The shop features antiques and other goods from dozens of vendors.
In a Facebook post, owner Andrew Rowland wrote:
“Dealing with the state government is indeed a challenge but with your continued patience and support I believe we will all be able to enjoy a Grand Re-Opening.”
And as promised, the mall reopened less than a week after closing.
Rowland has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, according to documents filed in federal court. This will allow the antique mall to operate while Rowland attempts to pay off the debt.
Rowland could not be reached for comment this week.
Since the mall reopened, customers and vendors have taken to social media to show their support.
