‘Noooo!!!!’: Johnson County restaurant known for its daiquiris closes after two years
KC Daiquiri Shop Bistreaux, an Overland Park Cajun and Creole restaurant, has closed after two years in business, its owners told The Star.
The restaurant, at 8725 Metcalf Ave., served its last customers Sunday.
“We had a good run in OP and gave the community something they had never seen before. But unfortunately all good things must come to an end,” said co-owner Kinley Strickland.
The business took to social media to share the news earlier this month:
“We sincerely appreciate everyone who has come in to support us, shared the word about our establishment, or just wished us well along the way,” the social media post reads.
After writing the post, owners Strickland and Calvin Vick told The Star they thought about pursuing a different concept in the same building. However, Strickland confirmed that they had decided to abandon the spot after all.
Its sister restaurant, KC Daiquiri Shop, opened in 2019 at 1116 Grand Blvd., and Strickland and Vick soon discovered that several customers were driving up from Johnson County to try their wings, fried shrimp and signature colorful daiquiris.
The duo opened the Overland Park Bistreaux in June 2021 with an expanded Creole and Cajun menu, including New Orleans gumbo, and shrimp or crawfish bisque.
Strickland and Vick won the Philanthropic Achievement Award from the NAACP Johnson County Branch in September.
There are few other Black-owned restaurants in Overland Park, including Taste of Africa at 11240 W. 135th St. and Elsa’s Ethiopian Restaurant at 8016 Santa Fe Drive.
Many customers jumped on the restaurant’s Facebook page to show their support.
“Sad to hear this .. one of my fav spots.”
“Noooo!!!! I eat here at least once a week!”
“Sad OP couldn’t see the vision but I love this place!”
Their downtown Kansas City spot will remain open.
