Inside Johnson County’s newest gallery, pastel portraits hang next to racks of patterned bucket hats and scarves. Some customers buy new art installations, while others peruse handmade jewelry and trinkets.

Tilted Door Gallery and Gifts, which opened April 21 at 8018 Santa Fe Drive, offers an array of pieces from makers and artists across the country.

Owner Tanis Meyers said she sees it as part of a booming art scene in downtown Overland Park. The shop opened during Overland Park’s Third Fridays downtown art walk, which runs every third Friday of the month from 5 to 8 p.m.

Tilted Door is just a few streets away from Images Art Gallery at 7320 W. 80th St.

“It’s getting to be an art heavy area,” Meyers said. “There’s several places they could stop and see things.”

Every Third Friday, her gallery will host an opening reception featuring a rotating selection of artists. She also plans to host live music in the store.

Meyers said the gallery aims to provide a variety of pieces, such as woodwork and abstract paintings, for both casual shoppers and serious collectors.

“Our goal in opening this is that it was an approachable gallery,” she said. “If somebody walks in, we have greeting cards that are $5, sculptures that are $1,400, and everything in between.”

A fiber artist herself, Meyers and her husband, Michael, wanted to create a space showcasing other creatives.

“When I opened my doors, it was an extension of my home,” she said. “I love the conversations I have with people and getting excited about art as a whole.”

Tilted Door is open from noon to 6 p.m. Wednesdays to Fridays and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.
