Here are the best hospitals in the Kansas City area, according to national ranking
For the 11th year in a row, the University of Kansas Hospital is the best hospital in Kansas City, according to the annual U.S. News & World Report ranking of hospitals nationwide.
Saint Luke’s is ranked No. 2 in the metro for 2020-21, with North Kansas City ranked No. 3 and AdventHealth Shawnee Mission at No. 4.
It was the seventh straight year KU and St. Luke’s were No. 1 and No. 2 in the area.
KU was also named the top hospital in the state of Kansas by U.S. News, which evaluated more than 4,500 facilities across the country. Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka was ranked No. 2, and AdventHealth Shawnee Mission was No. 3 in the state.
Saint Luke’s was ranked No. 2 in Missouri, behind only Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
The data used for this year’s Best Hospitals rankings and ratings predated the COVID-19 pandemic and “were not affected by the pandemic’s impact on hospitals,” the news website said.
“Our recognition as the best hospital in our city, state and region by U.S. News & World Report sends a strong message to patients, families and consumers about our commitment to quality,” Tammy Peterman, chief operating officer for the University of Kansas Health System, said in a statement. “This year the message about our consistent performance is even more powerful.”
The U.S. News rankings are based on reputation and data including patient outcomes and readmission rates.
Twenty-six adult specialties, procedures and conditions in “nearly every community hospital in America” were reviewed, the report says.
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, was named the best hospital in the country, followed by Cleveland Clinic at No. 2 and Johns Hopkins Hospital at No. 3.
Barnes-Jewish, tied at No. 18, was the only hospital in Missouri or Kansas on the 20-hospital “honor roll.”
KU ranked nationally in six specialties: ear, nose & throat (No. 17), geriatrics (29), nephrology (38), neurology and neurosurgery (30), pulmonology and lung cancer (42) and urology (42).
It was also listed as “high performing” in cancer, cardiology & heart surgery, diabetes and endocrinology, gastroenterology & GI surgery, and orthopedics.
Saint Luke’s cardiology and heart surgery specialty made a significant leap this year, from No. 42 in the nation last year to No. 22.
In addition, Saint Luke’s received “high performing” rankings in four specialty areas — gastroenterology and GI surgery, geriatrics, neurology and neurosurgery, and orthopedics.
It was also deemed “high performing” in eight procedures and conditions: abdominal aortic aneurysm repair; aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure, lung cancer surgery and transcatheter aortic valve replacement, TAVR.
This is the first year U.S. News included a TAVR rating in the cardiac category. The procedure is “rapidly being adopted as a minimally invasive alternative to aortic valve surgery,” the report says.
North Kansas City, which did not rank nationally in any specific specialty, received “high performing” rankings for eight procedures and conditions: colon cancer surgery, heart failure, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, hip replacement, knee replacement and COPD.
AdventHealth Shawnee Mission rated “high performing” for heart failure, knee replacement and COPD.
Here are other local hospitals that received “high performing” designation for specific conditions and procedures: Saint Luke’s East (heart failure and knee replacement), Saint Luke’s South (heart failure and hip replacement), Kansas City Orthopaedic Institute (hip replacement and knee replacement), Liberty Hospital (COPD), Research Medical Center (heart failure and COPD), Olathe Medical Center (heart failure) and St. Joseph Medical Center (heart failure).
