ExpressJet Airlines, operator of branded service for United Express, has opened a crew base at Kansas City International Airport that will be the operational hub for 265 airline personnel, airport officials said Tuesday.
Joe McBride, a spokesman for KCI, said ExpressJet has leased 2,863 square feet in Terminal C for a crew base. The facility will be the work home for 145 pilots, 85 flight attendants, and 35 maintenance and materials personnel.
About 40 percent, or more than 100 employees, are expected to live in the Kansas City area, while the rest will commute from elsewhere. Atlanta-based ExpressJet operates more than 400 jet airliners and has a total workforce of 9,000 people.
Republic Airways Holding also has expanded its crew base at KCI by 1,500 square feet and now occupies 3,962 square feet at Terminal C, McBride said. Republic, which operates branded flights for American Airlines, US Airways and United Airlines out of KCI, has had a crew base here since 2008.
McBride said Republic has 320 employees at its Kansas City crew base, including pilots, flight attendants and maintenance staff. He said about 25 percent live in the area; the rest commute here from around the U.S.
Republic is based in Indianapolis, operates 250 aircraft and employs more than 6,300 people.
