City Market’s The Bite opens Friday

The Bite’s tagline is: not your average sandwich shop.

Indeed.

The new City Market shop will offer about a dozen signature toasted sandwiches such as the Kicking Chicken (braised chicken with Korean barbecue sauce, queso fresco, radish, cucumber, pickled onions and sriracha crema), the Toadstool (a veggie sandwich with wild mushrooms, spinach, onions, smoked mozzarella and aioli), and the Senor Chang (slow roasted beef short rib, cilantro, queso fresco, pickled onions, candied jalapenos, and sriracha crema).

The menu also will include gluten-free build-your-own-tamales, along with sides such as sesame slaw and Veracruz salad (with cucumber, jicama, melon and pineapple with a chili lime vinaigrette).

BBC Concepts LLC is owner of the Bite. BBC’s partners are Bryan Merker owner of Beignet in the City Market and Lagniappe, Nica’s Cajun Kitchen in the Crossroads Arts District, Brian Thorne, and Carlos Mortera, a former chef at Nica’s.

Thorne and Mortera will oversee day-to-day operations of the Bite.

Mortera had once lived near the City Market.

“I thought it would be fun to open my first restaurant — something funky, something different — in the City Market,” Mortera said. “People come here as a retreat from their daily life.”

The Bite plans to open its doors at 10:30 a.m. Friday at 23 E. Third St.

Hours will then be 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
