Furniture, polo shirts, jewelry, more: What’s new, coming soon to Country Club Plaza
Kansas City’s iconic Country Club Plaza started the year with many dark spaces. But it has steadily been filling them, and more tenants are coming.
New retailers are selling furniture, home decor, gifts, jewelry, apparel, pet supplies and more. Rally House relocated and expanded. An ice cream shop and a couple of fitness studios are opening soon.
Here are some of the latest updates:
▪ KC Style Haus, 4704 Wyandotte St. The locally owned shop is a collective boutique offering goods from at least 40 vendors. Items currently include furniture such as sofas and sideboards, home decor, clothing and accessories, “pug mom” hats, jars of pickled red onions or barbecue sauce, coffee toffee, cookie samplers, black raspberry soap, lip balm, fuzzy slippers, bralettes, denim, faux leather fringed jackets, sunglasses, lamps, dog leashes and artwork.
“The furniture is cash-and-carry so you don’t have to wait. That’s a big issue with some furniture stores,” said Deserae Minor, owner. “We’re always bringing in new merchandise. And people love that we are local.”
KC Style Haus is in part of what was once the Plaza Theatre. RE: Emporium most recently occupied the space.
▪ The Normal Brand, 425 Nichols Road. The St. Louis family-owned retailer offers men’s and women’s apparel. Items include polo shirts, button-downs, T-shirts, hoodies, henleys, pullovers, bottoms, dresses, joggers, hats and bags — with some items displayed on a barbecue grill in a nod to Kansas City. Some of the apparel is in its special knit blend called Puremeso.
“It’s all very comfortable, especially the Puremeso,” said Conrad Sansone, one of the three brothers who own the company. “Our main goal in our stores is to make people’s day better. They can expect to be greeted with a smile, hear music playing and we have a signature scent in the stores from the candles and diffuser.”
The brothers have a store in St. Louis and one in Nashville. They also sell their products in more than 500 specialty stores and online.
Their mother helps design the stores. Another brother owns a real estate company, and he handled the negotiations for the Plaza location. They plan to expand nationally.
The Plaza store also will do events such as a recent tequila tasting. It will have a grand opening in the fall.
▪ The Shade Store, 212 Nichols. It will offer premium custom window treatments, design and services. A July 1 opening is scheduled. It also has a location in Leawood.
▪ Tirza Design, 321 Nichols. The brand features survivor-made earrings of high-quality gold-filled or sterling silver for sustainability. It also sells ceramics, home goods and gifts — mostly from local survivors, and has upscale, gently used consignment clothing.
Kate Spade New York formerly operated in the space.
▪ Lovesac, 340 W. 47th St. Modern furniture including high-quality bean bag chairs and sectionals, according to the company’s website. Officials couldn’t be reached for comment.
The space was previously home to pop-up retailers.
Relocated
Rally House relocated from 47th Street to the former Nike space at 211 Nichols.
The Lenexa-based chain offers a variety of sports apparel and accessories for teams on both sides of the state line, including the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals, the University of Missouri, the University of Kansas and Kansas State University. It also has products by local brands such as Boulevard Brewing Co., Gates Bar-B-Q and The Roasterie.
The 47th Street shop was 7,685 square feet, and the new location is 12,047 square feet. It will feature more seasonal items such as the current Royals selection.
It also has a location at 452 Ward Parkway, as well as others around the metro.
Coming soon
▪ Club Pilates, 610 W. 48th St. Aug. 1 opening.
▪ Ice Cream Bae, 418 Nichols, plans to open in September. It also has a Leawood location.
▪ Psycho Bunny, 415 Nichols. New York-based menswear brand. Plans summer opening.
▪ Pure Barre, 515 Nichols. Mid-to-late July.
Nordstrom site
In April, upscale department store Nordstrom said it was not going to be relocating from Overland Park to the Plaza.
A Nordstrom spokesperson indicated the deal was terminated at the request of Taubman and Macerich, the Plaza’s owners. The Plaza had no further comment.
Real estate sources say both Target (with apartments above) and Dillard’s have been proposed for the site.
On Friday, a Plaza spokeswoman said there is “no announcement regarding a new tenant for the Nordstrom site.”
