Kansas City’s d’Bronx deli and pizza has temporarily closed. Here’s why

After more than three decades on 39th Street, locally owned d’Bronx Authentic Deli and Pizzeria has temporarily closed.

It posted the notice on its front door at 3904 Bell St., saying it was closed “as we consider how to best serve the Roanoke and adjoining neighborhoods in the coming months and years. Being a part of this community is important to us and we want to ensure we are able to do that well into the future. Thank you for your continued support.”

Owner Don Foringer said he is in discussions with his landlord about improvements to the space, and there is no reopening date at this time.

Cadence Commercial Real Estate leases and manages the property.

“We want to see this reopen as soon as physically possible and we are both putting money into the space,” said Adam Lyngar, director of leasing. “It is a very old building. So it becomes a bigger project and harder to be open during the work.”

The original owner’s father owned a deli shop in the Bronx in New York. The owner moved to Kansas City with her husband and used the family’s recipes for d’Bronx. Menu items include New York-style pizza, calzones, Reubens, subs, lasagna, carrot cake and cheesecake.

The Mission location also is temporarily closed but is scheduled to open in the “coming weeks,” Foringer said, and its staff is currently in training at the Overland Park d’Bronx.

A Crown Center location closed in late September 2020, according to a Crown Center spokeswoman.
