Underdog Wine Co. is closing in midtown’s Union Hill.

Ryan and Jenny Sciara opened the shop, at 2984 Gillham Road, in late 2016. It is scheduled to close at the end of business on April 23.

“It just didn’t work out. I don’t know why. I wish I had the answer,” said Ryan Sciara. “We tried everything we could. We did grassroots marketing including door hangers and a direct mail campaign.”

Underdog Wine Co. sells wines by small producers, typically family owned wineries, but the “best bottles for the price.” It also has artisan spirits, and craft beers. During the closing sale, wines are 25% off, and beer and spirits are 20% off.

Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays until the closing.

“The worst day was telling friends and family and customers,” Ryan Sciara said. “We’re disappointed. You don’t open something to see it not work out. But we’re moving on.”

The Sciaras will focus on their Underdog Wine shop in the Crestwood Shops, 327 E. 55th St. It opened in a different Crestwood space in April 2014 and has since relocated and expanded.
