Kansas City ups its grocery game with renovated, expanded Price Chopper and new Aldi
In Kansas City grocery store updates: a renovated Price Chopper opens this week in Waldo, followed by a new Northland Aldi.
▪ After nearly seven months of renovations, Ball’s Price Chopper is reopening in south Kansas City’s Wornall Village.
The 37,000-square-foot store, at 8430 Wornall Road, planned to open at 8 a.m. Wednesday. It has expanded bakery, deli and produce departments, self-checkouts, a larger liquor department, and expanded pharmacy, as well as meat and seafood, and more.
The store also has new shelving and refrigeration cases, new HVAC systems, energy-efficient lighting and refrigeration equipment.
Hours will be 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
A 22,000-square-foot Safeway store opened there in 1964. It also operated under the Food Barn banner. In 1994, Balls’ Hen House took the spot (it had previously operated at 8238 Wornall). Balls Food converted it to the Price Chopper banner in mid-2004.
It is the anchor for the 50,000-square-foot shopping center, which also has now completed its $3 million exterior renovation. Wornall Village operates under a new Community Improvement District designation, which allows for an additional 1% sales tax on eligible purchases in the center.
Locally owned Joy Wok Super Buffet Hibachi Sushi is taking a 6,000-square-foot space at 8406 Wornall Road for a September opening. It offers such items as sesame chicken, orange beef or chicken, spicy beef and scallops, and pan fried noodles.
Nearly 10,000 square feet of retail space is still available.
▪ As part of its aggressive expansion plan that calls for 100 new stores this year across the country, Aldi will open a new Northland location this week.
The store, at 6238 N. Chatham Ave., is scheduled to open at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Aldi opened a location at 1945 N. 110th St., Kansas City, Kansas, in April, and remodeled four Kansas City stores this year. It has been in the area market for more than 30 years, and it has more than 35 area locations.
Aldi said it is “different by design” with 90% of its products being its exclusive brands. It also carries fresh, organic produce delivered daily, cheese and wine selections, and food for special diets including gluten-free products.
It also has Aldi Finds — limited-time specialty items that can include candles, unique foods, kitchen gadgets, seasonal decor and more.
