Health code violations temporarily close Kansas City barbecue, Crossroads restaurant

Two Kansas City restaurants and one retail store were temporarily closed recently to correct critical health code violations after inspections by the Kansas City Health Department. They have since been reinspected and reopened.

Anton’s Taproom Restaurant, a bar, restaurant, butcher shop and event space at 1610 Main St. in the Crossroads, temporarily closed after an Aug. 12 follow-up inspection. According to the report, the inspector did not have access to all areas of the establishment at the time of the inspection.

It was also cited for live cockroaches and mouse droppings found in open sticky traps at the bar.

It was a follow-up inspection to an Aug. 7 routine inspection when it had five violations. It had no critical violations during an Aug. 21 inspection.

The owner did not return phone calls seeking comment on the inspection report.

Big T’s Bar B Q, 9409 Blue Ridge Blvd., had three critical violations during a Sept. 3 follow-up inspection.

It was cited for build-up on the vent hoods of the barbecue pit, on storage shelves in the walk-in cooler, in the reach-in freezer, and on a storage shelf by the deep fryers — repeat violations.

The inspector also noted that an employee sneezed into his armpit while prepping meat at the meat slicer and did not wash his hands.

It had no critical violations during a Sept. 5 follow-up inspection and was allowed to reopen.

Restaurant officials did not return phone calls seeking comment on the report.

Family Dollar, 6003 Independence Ave. According to the health department, it temporarily closed for “mask violations and trash issues” after a Sept. 9 inspection following a complaint.

It had no critical violations during a Sept. 14 follow-up inspection and reopened.

In a statement, a Family Dollar spokeswoman said: “We take situations like this seriously and are committed to ensuring our stores adhere to all local regulations and Company standards. We have been working with the health inspector and our store is now re-open.”
