Crossroads coffee shop hoped it had its ‘forever home.’ A year later it closes for good

A year after relocating to a new spot, Crossroads favorite Thou Mayest coffee shop has closed permanently.

It posted a closing sign on the front window of the shop, at 519 E. 18th St., and partner Bo Nelson confirmed the closing.

Thou Mayest first opened in mid-2014, taking a two-story spot with a patio at 419 E. 18th St., by Grinders. It quickly built a loyal following.

While it had to close in late 2018, it found a new location just a block away and hoped the block would be a place “to call our forever home,” Nelson said at the time.

It opened under the name Thee Outpost and was to be a concept that could pop-up at different spots around town.

But later it returned to the Thou Mayest brand and Nelson was looking at making it a flagship location in another building on the block.

“But with COVID, no one was coming in anymore,” he said.

Sister operations include a Thou Mayest in the River Market and Cafe Equinox in Shawnee, which are currently open. There also is a Thou Mayest in The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, which is temporarily closed.

Thou Mayest also has a wholesale coffee roasting operation.
