Business shifts in Prairie Village to serve up new yogurt, ice cream options

Two Prairie Village dessert staples are seeing big changes after decades of operations.

After nearly three decades in the Prairie Village Shopping Center, TCBY will shut down Sunday and reopen Monday as Chill in the Village. Karie Nelson purchased the shop in late 2018.

“TCBY was a solid business for sure. But I felt like it was time to have something new and fresh, to do our own thing,” she said.

Chill will offer frozen yogurt and gourmet ice cream (with a higher fat content) in a variety of flavors, including cherry amaretto, Tahitian vanilla, Cookie Monster, PlayDough and triple chocolate. Its popular yogurt parfait will still be on the menu, along with new items such as the Brain Freeze (a mix of Sprite and yogurt).

According to The Kansas City Star archives, TCBY opened in the spot at 6966 Mission Road in July 1990.

Nelson said the community has been very supportive of the shop and she wants it to continue to be a place where families can gather, and children can pick up a snack after school and have their first job in high school.

Summer Salt Ice Cream Co. plans to open in the former Mely’s Yogurt & Ice Cream spot in Corinth Square Shopping Center, 4051 Somerset Drive. The owner couldn’t be reached for comment.
