Jake Randall spreads out the little black and silver cards with a gleam in his eye.

During the Jan. 23 grand opening of his new Doughnut Lounge in Overland Park, customers purchasing a box of a dozen doughnuts will receive one of the cards with a prize: a free coffee, a free espresso, one free breakfast entree or a free box of a dozen doughnuts.

But five customers will receive a “Doughnut Lounge Black Card,” a card that gets the customer one free doughnut a day for life at any of the Doughnut Lounge locations.

The giveaways will run from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. while supplies last. But Randall is making a whopping 2,000 doughnuts for opening day.

Menu items include classic doughnuts such as maple glazed, mocha (a chocolate cake doughnut with coffee icing and sprinkled with espresso), and apple cinnamon fritters. Signature doughnuts include bourbon pecan pie (a vanilla cake doughnut glazed in house whiskey and fig toffee and topped with chopped candied pecans and a light ganache drizzle).

It also offers hot breakfasts such as biscuits and gravy, and the Kansas City Scramble (Q39 burnt ends, fried potatoes, scrambled eggs and corn salsa with a sheep’s cheese bechamel). Its noduts (knife and fork donuts) include the Chicken Fried (honey sriracha glazed chicken thighs with maple bacon on a waffle doughnut called a wonut).

It also has gluten-free and vegan doughnuts (two options of each every day) and serves Messenger coffee. Its full bar will debut in mid-February.

Customers can grab-and-go or dine-in with table service. The space, at 7926 Santa Fe Drive in downtown Overland Park, also has garage doors that will open during nicer weather.

“There is a momentum happening here, the condos being built. There’s synergy and energy happening that is beautiful,” Randall said. “There’s a sense of community and that’s what makes a business successful. Our neighboring businesses are ‘Hey, we have your back. Whatever you need.’ Kind of the same thing that happened in Westport even though it is a different demographic.”

He opened his first Doughnut Lounge in Westport in 2015 and also plans a North Kansas City location scheduled to open in March.
