Cuisine of India adds to Barry Road’s restaurant row
The Northland’s Moti Mahal Cuisine of India has a new home, less than a half mile from its original location.
The new restaurant, at 7111 N.W. Barry Road, is easily seen from the high-traffic Barry Road and is just south of Zona Rosa.
Moti Mahal serves a $9.95 lunch buffet from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Buffet items rotate but can include tandoori chicken, goat curry, veggie pakora, yellow squash with potato, and basmati rice — but the buffet always includes a salad bar. Customers also can order off the menu.
Dinner hours are 5 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. The restaurant is closed on Monday.
Regular menu items include tandoori dishes; lamb or fish Vindaloo; goat pashoo; and chicken biryani. Items are made to order and can be served mild, medium or spicy. It also has vegetarian items, as well as family-style dinners serving two to four people, and a children’s menu.
Owner Jorabar “Jay” Singh Shokar has spent his career in the restaurant industry, first in his native northern India, then when he moved to San Francisco in 1995. He came to Kansas City in 1996 and in 2004 opened Korma Sutra in Westport with a partner. He opened Moti Mahal in mid-2013 at 8140 N.W. Prairie View Road and closed it a year later.
The new Moti Mahal makes for a restaurant row in this center just west of Interstate 29. Ixtapa Fine Mexican Cuisine and Rainbow Chinese Restaurant and Bar also operate there.
Plaza updates
The Country Club Plaza is adding some “exclusive to the market” tenants.
▪ Kansas City native and eyewear industry expert Bill Barton, along with eyewear designer Patty Perreira, are bringing their luxury eyewear brand, Barton Perreira, to Kansas City, opening up a shop at 421 Nichols Road in mid-March. The Optical Shop of Aspen had previously occupied the 914-square-foot space.
It will be the third shop for the Barton Perreira brand. It also has locations in Aspen, Colo., and Nashville, Tenn.
Barton said he grew up eight blocks from the Plaza and had his first retail job at a men’s clothing store there. He founded the Barton Perreira brand with Perreira in 2007, designing each piece and offering limited quantities of each design.
Barton also was the former president of the Optical Shop of Aspen.
Mike Niewald, who grew up in Kansas City with Barton, spent two decades with the Optical Shop of Aspen, including working as regional manager. Niewald will be managing partner of the new Plaza Barton Perreira, which will carry the Barton Perreira brand as well as some other exclusive collections.
“Barton Perreira is very well made, a great value for its price point,” Niewald said.
▪ Interior design studio and home furnishings boutique Coveted Home is relocating from Prairie Village’s Corinth Square to 610 W. 48th St.
Coveted Home is set to open a 1,564-square-foot showroom on the Country Club Plaza in May. The retail store will sell high-quality brand-name furniture and home decor, including items by local designers such as Barbara Cosgrove Lamps as well as products by Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams.
Jaclyn Joslin, designer and founder of Coveted Home, had previously owned and operated Urban Dwellings Design in the River Market. She closed that store to open Coveted Home in Corinth Square, 4113 W. 83rd St., in 2012, and plans to remain open there until shortly before the Plaza store opens.
She said the Plaza is a destination spot both for area residents and tourists.
“I think the Plaza is a really great fit for us,” Joslin said. “The other retailers that are down there are in line with what we have to offer. The Plaza is a great place for foot traffic, for more exposure.”
▪ A previously announced tenant, Zoës Kitchen, plans a March opening in a 2,778-square-foot space at 100 Ward Parkway. The fast casual restaurant chain offers a Mediterranean-inspired menu.
