You and your arteries can soon enjoy deep-fried Twinkies at home
If you haven’t been to a state fair lately, you haven’t seen all the weird and wacky things food vendors are frying up.
Fried beer. Fried butter balls. Fried jelly beans. Fried Twinkies. Fried Pepsi. Deep-fried mashed potatoes — on a stick, no less.
One of those is coming soon to your freezer.
“Sound the trumpets. Prepare the fatted calf. Ready the arteries. Deep-fried Twinkies are headed to Walmart,” blared Mashable.
Wal-Mart developed the treat with Hostess, according to Anne D’Innocenzio, national retail writer for The Associated Press. The New York Post reported the rumors last summer.
D’Innocenzio announced the news on Twitter.
Deep fried Twinkies? Wal-Mart worked with Hostess to develop this decadent treat. $WMT has a one-year exclusive pic.twitter.com/5R3lH1Fc0l

And then Twitter went wild with the jokes — and skepticism.

You can't package deep fried Twinkies! That takes the magic out of it! They need to be hot and crispy and steamy! https://t.co/gsS2fjyzUb

Note that they come frozen.
“These will not be the kind of shelf-stable treats you just grab from the pantry,” writes New York restaurant blog Grubstreet.
“Instead, to emulate the straight-out-of-a-hot-vat-of-oil sensation, Hostess decided to make these a freezer-aisle item, meaning you will have to heat them, and that lots of lazy college kids will soon know exactly what a cold deep-fried Twinkie tastes like.”
The new Twinkies will be available only at Wal-Mart for the first year, according to D’Innocenzio. They’ve already been spotted in some stores.
They come in two flavors: original golden and chocolate.
And then, who knows?
Fried Sno Balls anyone?
