Kansas City-based Assurant reports financial improvements

Assurant Employee Benefits, which is headquartered in Kansas City, reported improved operating results in the second quarter.

The specialty insurance and benefits company said net operating income increased 25 percent to $14.4 million in the quarter compared with the same period in 2013. Net earned premiums, fees and other revenue increased 4 percent during the quarter to $268.8 million.

Assurant, a unit of Assurant Inc., said sales decreased slightly in the quarter, reflecting employer payments on dental plans.
