Oklahoma’s Ted’s Cafe Escondido picked the Kansas City area for its first expansion outside its home state.

The company, which is currently celebrating its 25th year in operation, opened an Overland Park restaurant a year ago and a Lee’s Summit location in July 2015. Its Northland restaurant opened in March and it also plans a location in Ward Parkway Center’s new “south end restaurant district.”

It describes the menu as Mexican food with a Tex-Mex flare, prepared daily with fresh ingredients.

District manager Danny Ragusa said fajitas are the most popular menu items, as well as other menu items using its slow marinated meats including its fajita nachos supreme, fajita salads, and enchiladas.

Each each table is served complimentary warm chips, fresh salsa and warm cheese sauce as soon as the customers are seated. They also are offered complimentary fresh housemade flour tortillas and free sopapilla for dessert. Customers also can watch employees making the fresh flour tortillas behind a glassed in area.

Other menu items include pork chili verde, and Chicken Monterey (slow marinated chicken breast smothered with caramelized onions and peppers and melted cheddar and jack cheeses).

The 7,000-square-foot Ted's Cafe Escondido — at 8300 N. Booth Ave. in the Village at Shoal Creek — is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sunday.

North KC coffee and beer

North Kansas City’s new Colony Espresso & Beer Co. had a pre-opening event Friday and now plans a grand opening later this week.

The operation, at 312 Armour Road, will be part coffee shop, part bar, and feature coffee and craft beer selections from around the country in a relaxed setting.

Hours will be 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to midnight Friday and Saturday. It will be closed on Sunday.
