Starting in September, Megabus riders in Kansas City will be able to reserve the best seats on the blue double-decker buses.
The 10 most popular seats, such as those on the upper deck balcony and seats with table access, will soon have solid blue coloring with large embroidered numbers. Megabus customers can pick which seat they’d like to reserve when they buy tickets on Megabus.com, guaranteeing a view, extra space or a seat next to a friend.
Mike Alvich, the vice president of marketing and product management for Coach USA and Megabus, said the new feature is an answer to customer suggestions and complaints. Megabus is a subsidiary of Coach USA.
“Our customers have said to us there were 10 seats on our double-decker buses — our buses carry 81 passengers — there were 10 that were their favorites,” Alvich said.
Passengers were showing up early for their trips to claim those spots.
“People were saying to us, ‘Why do we have to get there so early all the time? Can you do something about it?’”
Individual seat reservation fees vary but are typically between $3 and $7, depending on the route and the seat. The reservation option is available for rides in the Midwest on or after Sept. 10.
Megabus’ seat reservation option was first launched in May on select Baltimore, Boston, Philadelphia, New York and Washington, D.C., routes.
Kansas City is among 16 Midwest cities scheduled to start the reservation service in September. Others include Columbia, St. Louis and Chicago.
Megabus has had a station in Kansas City since 2007. The company started service in 2006 and is one of the largest privately funded express bus service providers in North America.
