Honda will revive hatchback version of Civic

Honda plans to offer a hatchback version of its Civic in the U.S. for the first time since 2005, providing a utilitarian option after revamping the popular small car with a sporty update.

The automaker unveiled the hatchback prototype Tuesday before the New York International Auto Show. The two-door coupe version “gave us style and the hatchback will give us utility and functionality,’’ said John Mendel, Honda’s executive vice president for U.S. sales.

The additional version will be available later this year.

With the hatchback, Honda hopes to attract buyers who might otherwise opt for sport utility vehicles or crossovers, said Stephanie Brinley, an analyst at IHS Automotive.
