Mariner Wealth buys stake in Pennsylvania firm

Leawood-based Mariner Wealth Advisors has bought a majority stake in a Pennsylvania firm that advises customers on investing nearly $1 billion.

Vantage Investment Advisors, based in State College, Pa., is led and owned by Robert R. Thomas, who founded the company in 2000. Its clients are mostly individuals and wealthy investors as well as some pension and profit-sharing plans, according to its report to the Securities and Exchange Commission.

An announcement of the deal said it involves 14 advisers and would boost Mariner Wealth’s business in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.

It also opens to clients of Vantage other services Mariner Wealth offers, such as trust and estate planning, tax advisory services, retirement plan services, investment banking, valuation advisory and forensic accounting services and insurance consulting.

Mariner Wealth, in part through other transactions, has grown to manage $12.45 billion. It is part of Mariner Holdings and led by chief executive Martin C. Bicknell.
