The Northland has two new locally owned restaurants:

▪ The family-owned Asian Buffet has taken over the former Jose Pepper’s building at 511 N.W. Barry Road.

Menu items include appetizers like chicken wings, egg rolls, and dumplings. It also serves Egg Foo Young, Chow Mein, Lo Mein, and a variety of chicken, beef, pork and seafood dishes with rice. Specialties include shrimp and scallops in garlic sauce, lemon chicken and sesame beef.

Its lunch buffet is served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily — more than 60 choices for $8.50. The dinner buffet is served from 4 to 10 p.m. Monday through Thursday for $10.25 and includes roast beef, squid, crawfish and black pepper shrimp. The weekend dinner buffet is served from 4 to 10 p.m. for $13.80 and also includes crab legs, sauteed blue crab and coconut shrimp.

Restaurant hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

The Lin family opened Leavenworth China Buffet in Leavenworth, Kan., in 2002, and Buffet Garden in Grandview in 2004. The Barry Road restaurant opened in mid-December.

“People in this area were wanting a Chinese buffet and this location has easy access from the interstate,” said Alex Lin, partner and manager of the Northland location.

▪ Spin Neapolitan Pizza is now open in The Village at Burlington Creek. The location, at 6100 N.W. 63rd Terrace, is just west of Interstate 29.

Spin took over the former All Star Pizza & Pub space. All Star opened in mid-2009. The 3,862-square-foot restaurant seats 54 at the bar, 86 in the dining room and 30 on the patio.

Spin was founded in Overland Park in 2005, and the new Northland location is its 10th in the metro. It also is expanding in several other states with corporate and franchised locations.

James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Smith collaborated on the menu, which includes hand-spun, stone-fired pizzas, fresh salads topped with made-from-scratch dressings, house-made soups, signature panini and Italian deli sandwiches, appetizers, small plates, all-natural gelato ice creams, premium wines, barrel wines, a selection of craft beers, and house-made white, red and blood orange sangrias.

Spin has been recognized for its hybrid service style — customers order at the counter like traditional fast-casual ordering but get full-service at the table.

Hours will be 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Spin also has area locations in Crown Center, south of the Country Club Plaza, Lee’s Summit, Lenexa, Overland Park, Olathe, Prairie Village and Warrensburg.
