KU Hospital may expand in Overland Park
The Winbury Group, owner of the Highlands Corporate Campus near Interstate 435 and Nall, has filed a permit application with the Overland Park Planning Commission that would allow expansion of the University of Kansas Hospital facility on the site.
The permit would cover possible expansion of up to 60 new acute-care hospital beds on KU Hospital’s existing Indian Creek Campus, but hospital spokesman David McCulloch said nothing was certain yet.
“It’s no secret of the fact that we need beds and operating rooms,” McCulloch said, “and if we come up with a win-win for us and the property owners, there may be new construction, but it’s not a done deal.”
The planning commission has approved a special use permit for a three-story, 118,000-square-foot facility. The site was zoned for office use. The topic is on the Overland Park City Council agenda for Dec. 7.
“At this point, we don’t know if the project will happen or not,” McCulloch said. “The number of beds are still up in the air. Our current facility there has 12 beds, and we don’t know how many more we’d include in the project.”
