Independence warns of scam on utility payments
The city of Independence has issued a warning about a scam aimed at Spanish-speaking business owners.
Several business customers of the city utility have received calls from someone speaking Spanish who threatens to shut off utility services unless immediate payment is made. The city says it will never request personal information over the telephone.
Scams of this nature tend to increase around the holiday season and residents are advised to exercise extreme caution. Any Independence Power and Light customers who receive such a call should contact police at 816-325-7960.
