Boulevard Brewing Co. on Wednesday officially started construction on a $12 million expansion project that will increase its beer fermentation capacity by 40 percent. Dubbed Cellar Five, the expansion is scheduled to be completed by mid-2015. It consists of a 3,600-square-foot, single-story fermentation structure that will boost capacity from 220,000 barrels to more than 300,000 barrels, alongside a two-story 8,400-square-foot utility and process building.

Boulevard, the No. 12 craft brewery in the United States, said it needed additional capacity to meet its expanding market. It is also investing $2.5 million for a wastewater treatment plant, also to come on line in mid-2015. Rau Construction is the general contractor on the project, and CRB Engineers is the lead designer.
