Operator selected to run KC downtown streetcar
The Kansas City Streetcar Authority has recommended Herzog Transit Services to operate and maintain Kansas City’s downtown streetcar system.
St. Joseph-based Herzog, which operates rail systems in Austin, Dallas and California, was chosen over RDMT, another leading rail contractor. A contract still needs to be negotiated in the next 30 to 45 days.
Kansas City’s downtown streetcar system is expected to be up and running in late 2015. Streetcar Authority officials anticipate the contract will include a five-year operating agreement. Operating costs are expected to run about $2.8 million per year when the system is fully operational.
