Toyota is moving some Tacoma pickup production from Mexico to Texas
Amid fraught negotiations over the future of North American trade rules that govern auto manufacturing and other sectors, Toyota is moving some of its production of its Tacoma pickup truck from Mexico to Texas.
The Japanese manufacturer announced on Monday, July 6 a $3.6 billion expansion of its San Antonio plant to support a second assembly line that will build the Tacoma. Toyota says the Texas plant expansion will create 2,000 jobs and 2.5 million square feet to its San Antonio campus.
The Tacoma has previously been built at Toyota's plant in Tijuana and Guanajuato, Mexico. The company said the transition of the vehicle's assembly that was taking place in Tijuana to Texas is expected to take about four years. Toyota said some Tacomas will still be built in Guanajuato.
When the transition is done, about half of Tacoma's production will take place in San Antonio. Last year, Toyota said it built 143,999 units of the popular pickup in Guanajuato and the company says now it anticipates building 150,000 units of the vehicle in San Antonio when the new assembly line is fully built out.
"Toyota's continued investment in North America is a testament to our confidence in the region's workforce, innovation and long-term growth potential," Ted Ogawa, president and chief executive officer of Toyota Motor North America, said in a statement.
"By expanding our San Antonio plant, we are deepening our commitment to American manufacturing, creating meaningful and sustainable jobs, while advancing our mission to deliver high-quality vehicles that meet the changing needs of customers today and into the future," continued.
How long has Toyota been selling the Tacoma pick up truck?
Toyota first introduced the Tacoma in 1995. The vehicle is now up to its fourth generation, with the most recent update being released in 2023.
The 2026 version starts at $32,445 and it is available in 11 different trims.
Toyota said in a website post the "Tacoma is built to take on whatever's in front of you. With a range of purpose-built suspension options, and available trail-conquering features like a multi-link rear suspension, Stabilizer Disconnect Mechanism and Crawl Control, it never met a challenge it didn't like."
How many Tacomas has Toyota sold?
Toyota sold 274,638 Tacoma pickup trucks in 2025, which was up from the 192,813 units of the vehicle the Japanese manufacturer sold in 2024.
