KC landlord’s properties were auctioned off after lawsuit. Here’s who bought them

The bidding closed Wednesday in a court-ordered auction of Kansas City landlord Oliver Abnos’ properties.

In 2021, Abnos lost a lawsuit and subsequent appeal in a case in which a tenant said she had been sexually assaulted by one of Abnos’ maintenance workers. The judge awarded the tenant $2 million. After Abnos failed to pay, a receiver was appointed to take control of his assets. (Some of the buildings were abandoned. Others still had commercial and residential tenants, who have continued to pay rent to the receiver.)

Mayo Auctions and Realty divided 44 properties into 12 groups that were auctioned over the past month. The auction netted $3.6 million. The excess funds beyond the $2 million judgment will be used to pay off other claims and taxes; anything left will go to Abnos.

Here are the winning bidders and the prices they paid:

3236 W. Coleman Road (single-family home): Iftikhar Ali of Phawakle LLC, $172,750

3515 and 3521 Forest Ave. (fire-damaged single-family home and vacant lot): Yoli Sanchez of A & R Realty LLC, $157,751.00
