The Kansas City Council has postponed until July 16 a vote on The Kansas City Star’s request to extend the company’s press plant tax abatement for another 15 years.

The Star’s previous 10-year tax abatement on the downtown press facility expired in 2014. On Wednesday, a council committee endorsed the tax break extension to 2029, and a vote by the full council was expected Thursday.

But Councilman Russ Johnson sought the one-week delay in the vote to allow for a discussion about a possible public-private partnership with The Star over use of its downtown parking lots.
