Two ice cream shops in Kansas City have achieved national recognition for their summertime treats.

Crowdsourced business ratings giant Yelp recently released a list of the best ice cream spots in every state, naming Overland Park’s The Golden Scoop as Kansas’ winner and Kansas City’s Cookies and Creamery as the champion for Missouri.

Cookies and Creamery is a spinoff of local cotton candy maker Cottontale KC. The whimsical location and its signature bicycle cart are decorated in brightly colored, graffiti-style artwork.

The business serves more than just ice cream: It also offers fresh baked cookies, flavored milks from Shatto Milk Company and rainbow tubs of cotton candy and popcorn. Its storefront is located at 533 E. Red Bridge Road in the Red Bridge Shopping Center.

The Golden Scoop is an Overland Park nonprofit ice cream parlor and coffee shop that employs people with developmental disabilities. Its employees also help create flavors and are involved in every part of running the business.

Stop by the Golden Scoop for classic flavors like Mint Chocolate Chip, Coffee, and Vanilla as well as creative ones like Strawberry Jam, Cinnamon Toast Crunch and Turtle Chocolate with Pecans. You can also grab flavored lattes, baked goods and smoothies.

This ice cream and coffee spot was also recommended by readers in The Star’s coffee shop bracket earlier this year.

Yelp picked each state’s top ice cream spots based on their number of reviews and how many stars customers awarded them in the past year. The businesses also had to be actively open and receive passing health scores.
