New Whataburger opens Monday in Blue Springs. What you need to know about traffic

Headed to the opening of Whataburger’s Blue Springs location on Monday? The city wants you to know this about the flow of traffic.

Recent Kansas City area openings of the Texas-based chain have attracted long lines of customers that caused traffic to stretch for blocks. To lessen the impact of that congestion, Blue Springs will have detours in place when the chain opens its latest location at 11 a.m. Monday at 905 Missouri 7 highway.

The closure and detours will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through May 15 as needed. Here’s what to expect:

  • The westbound lane of Northwest South Outer Road will be closed from Missouri 7 west to Northwest Mock Avenue, preventing vehicles from turning from Missouri 7 onto Northwest South Outer Road.
  • Westbound traffic on Northwest Mock will not be able to cross over Missouri 7. Instead they will have to turn north on Missouri 7.
  • For those headed to the fast food restaurant, the city is asking drivers to use westbound R.D. Mize Road. At Northwest 15th Street, they should head north. Once they get to Northwest South Outer Road, they should head east to get to the entrance of Whataburger.

Whataburger well pay for the enhanced police and traffic assistance, the city said. People driving through the area should expect heavier traffic than usual.

“We wanted to ensure traffic does not back up onto Missouri Highway 7 and that residents and visitors will not be inconvenienced by the influx of traffic,” said Blue Springs Police Chief Bob Muenz in a news released. “We ask that vehicles respect the nearby neighborhoods and businesses and keep to the outlined detour routes.”

The fast food restaurant is opening in the former Winstead’s location, which closed in late 2018.
