A water main break led the Independence Center shopping mall to close its doors earlier than scheduled on Monday afternoon.

Below-freezing temperatures were cited as the likely cause behind the broken main, mall officials said in a Facebook post. Work was being done to bring the flooding under control, fix the broken system and clean up the affected areas.

“We apologize for the inconvenience,” the post read.

Temperatures across the Kansas City area fell below freezing on Monday as many returned to work and commerce in the New Year.

On Monday, Kansas City International Airport recorded temperatures hovering around 10 degrees through the morning rush hour. But wind chill made the outdoors feel around zero degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Kansas City.
