American Airlines said Thursday it will add nonstop service between Kansas City International Airport and Miami on March 5.

The approximately three-hour flight will depart daily from KCI at 6 a.m. for Miami International Airport. A return flight from Miami is scheduled to land at KCI at about 10:05 p.m. American will use Boeing 737-800 equipment on the route.

This is the first nonstop flight between Kansas City and Miami in several years, and the new service provides another long-sought opening to Latin America for travelers using KCI.

The service brings the total number of nonstop routes served from KCI to 45, including five destinations in Florida, according to the Kansas City Aviation Department.

American and its merger partner US Airways currently operate 30 daily departures from Kansas City, with nonstop service to six cities. The two carriers are in the process of consolidating their operations following their merger last year.
