Need a COVID-19 mask but want to shop local? Here’s how to buy from Kansas City makers
As Kansas City businesses prepare to reopen from stay-at-home orders issued to combat the novel coronavirus, they’ll need masks and hand sanitizer in bulk. And City Hall hopes they’ll shop local.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas’ office on Friday announced it had launched www.kcppe.com to help businesses find local makers of masks, hand sanitizer and face shields needed to reopen in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. To make it happen, City Hall partnered with Made in Kansas City, which has seven metro stores featuring products from local makers.
The company’s co-founder Tyler Enders said in a statement he was confident local vendors could fulfill the need for personal protective equipment, or PPE.
“We’ve been so proud to see how many Kansas Citians have found ways to help fight this pandemic — many by sewing face masks,” Enders said. “As we look to recover and rebuild, it’s so important to consider the impact of our dollars.”
Customers can buy homemade masks from a variety of local brands and hand sanitizer from a chemical supplier or distillery. Face shields are available from one vendor.
In a statement, Lucas urged employers to buy local.
“I’m tremendously proud of the way our local business community has stepped up during this crisis — many halting or adding to their normal operations to make PPE and sanitary items for our frontline workers, our homeless population, and our community at large,” Lucas said. “As we begin to reopen our community, we must implement sustainable strategies that keep our workforce healthy and support our local businesses.”
Vendors can apply on the website to have their products featured.
The move comes after Lucas announced rules for businesses reopening this month. Businesses that draw the general public are required to provide masks for their employees, and businesses can refuse to serve customers who aren’t wearing masks.
Many local businesses will reopen May 6, and restaurants, gyms and other high traffic establishments will be allowed to open May 15. Dates in surrounding counties vary.
