Those black and yellow Sprint cars — from the Overland Park-based wireless company, not the race track – will expand their routes June 1 to any consumer switching to Sprint.

The cars have been delivering new phones to Sprint customers who upgrade in Kansas City, Miami and Chicago. They’re now also a delivery option for rival carriers’ “well qualified” customers who switch.

Direct 2 You, as the free service is called, began in April in the three markets. The company ultimately expects to hire 5,000 delivery employees as the concierge-style service expands nationally.

It’s slated to begin in New York City, San Francisco and Denver next month.

The service includes a demonstration of the new device and Sprint service features and transfer of photos, contacts, apps, games and other data from the customers’ previous device.
