Jerry Heaster scholarship awarded to former Star business intern Lily O’Neill

A former business journalism intern at The Kansas City Star was awarded the Jerry Heaster Scholarship in Business Journalism..

Lily O’Neill, a junior at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, is the 2017 recipient of the $2,000 scholarship. Her studies emphasize magazine writing and include a minor in Spanish. O’Neill worked at The Star last summer and is the second student to win the award.

“My internship provided a great introduction into the field of business journalism, and the staff encouraged and mentored me to continue my pursuit,” O’Neill said in an announcement of the award. “I will expand my work in business journalism this summer as an intern for Missouri Business Alert.”

Heaster was an award-winning business editor and columnist at The Star. The scholarship was created after his death in 2012.
